cycle action whakatane

We are a dedicated group of volunteers doing what we can to make cycling the best choice of transport for regular daily travel, and promoting cycling for sport, leisure & recreation. Cycling is healthy, good for the environment and great for Whakatane!

STRATEGY TO MEET DAILY TRAVEL:

  • cycle routes to all schools and 3 main shopping areas to be prioritised. Preferably off-road (eg. Mokorua river route behind Whakatane Hospital).
  • bike racks in main centres
  • If on-road, then widened and cleared of parked cars to a reasonable width
  • Speed reduction along on-road routes during peak times
  • Work with schools and other groups to raise awareness & safety
  • Proposed cycle racks, suggestions are - Main shopping areas (spread around important areas) – The Strand x 3, Kope x 2, The Hub x 2; Playgrounds and parks – skate park, Whakatane Heads, the Bridge swimming hole, Warren Park playground, War Memorial Halll, Gorge Road end of the bird walk, James St / Rimu St playground, Tuhoe Avenue park.

TO FULFIL SPORT, LEISURE & RECREATION NEEDS:

  • Peripheral cycle route along river and lagoon
  • Routes to have an upgraded surface with seal or very fine, well compacted metal.  Widened to safely accommodate cyclists and pedestrians
  • Upgrade and formalise existing routes through parks (Rex Morpeth, Warren Ave & Tuhoe Avenue) as above
  • Increased cleansing frequency, especially after weekend nights on park paths to clear glass & debris
  • Proposed route along Valley Road Reserve
  • Proposed infrastructure improvements & installations for sport cycling, attracting funding from external funders.
